Rose Hill Plantation History


  • This fine Gothic Revival home has served as a backdrop to the many faces and lives that tell the fascinating history of this Lowcountry area of South Carolina
  • Rose Hill Plantation, once part of Devil's Elbow Barony, was granted to Sir John Colleton by King Charles II in 1718.
  • Construction on the Rose Hill house was started in the late 1850s by planter and physician, Dr. John Kirk and his wife Caroline.
  • The work was halted by the Civil War as John and Caroline sought refuge in Grahamville, South Carolina. Although the house was occupied after the war, the economy made it impossible to complete the interior. Letters written between 1803 and 1868 reveal the pathos and tragedy of the Kirk family history.
  • In 1946, John and Betsy Gould Sturgeon purchased the house and employed prominent architect Willis Irvin to direct the completion of the house in a highly sophisticated manner.
  • In 1955, Vogue Magazine published a feature story on the house, with photos of the furnished interior
  • In 1980, the Rose Hill Plantation Development Co. (the Welton family) purchased the land for development of a planned residential community. In 1983, the Rose Hill Plantation house was listed in the National Register of Historic Places, thanks to the efforts of Iva Welton. The house was opened to the public for tours, and an extensive rehabilitation of the house was completed in 1986. 
  • In 1987, a major fire caused devastating damage to the entire house.  The copper roof melted and caved in and the entire 2nd floor and attic were gutted.   
  • After the fire of 1987,  the copper roof was replaced and the porch's posts were redesigned to the Kirk's original wood & Gothic look.  Inside, only the central domed hall & spiral staircase had been restored & painted.  The rest of the house remained charred, in an unfinished state. 
  • On April 12,1996, Rose Hill Plantation House was purchased by the Middleton White Foundation and has been restored as a private home.

Rose Hill Mansion



The historic Rose Hill Mansion, known as the most beautiful plantation house in the Lowcountry, has long held a treasured place in Southern history. Originally built in the late 1850s by planter and physician, Dr. John Kirk and his wife Caroline, the plantation was a wedding present from Caroline's father, James Kirk.
      Work was halted by the Civil War, and while occupied through the years, the interior was not completed until 1946, when new owners John and Betsy Gould Sturgeon finished it in grand style.  In 1980, the Welton family purchased the land and the house was later listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In 1987, a fire devastated the house & it sat in a state of ruin until purchased and restored by The Middleton White Foundation. After a decade long restoration, the home is now shared with the public each day, via guided history tours.
     The grand entry’s original open stringer spiral staircase is period grandeur. See the portrait of James Brown Kirk ( original founder of Bluffton ) & Dr. John Kirk, painted by granddaughter Emily, at the request of her mother, Caroline. The Kirk family returned these portraits, as well as other family heirlooms & original documents when the home was opened for tours in 2007. Seafood Festival at Shelter Cove Park, Hilton Head Island, SC

The sixth annual Hilton Head Island Seafood Fest, sponsored by the David M. Carmines Memorial Foundation and Hilton Head Chrysler Dogde Jeep Ram, is set to take place Friday, April 4, 2013, 5-8pm, and Saturday, April 5, 11am-5pm, at Shelter Cove Community Park.

Friday night there will be a more intimate gathering than the main event on Saturday and will feature live entertainment from Cranford & Sons’ Hilton Head Island's Rockabilly-Folk Explosion/Low Country Stomp band’s as well as delicious food from Alexander’s, Black Marlin’s, Cool Breeze, Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks, Island Kettle Corn, Joe Loves Lobster Rolls LLC, The Old Oyster Factory, Red Fish, Skull Creek Boathouse and Street Meet.

Seafood Fest will continue on Saturday and feature more than a dozen area restaurants dishing up local and regional seafood specialties, and other tasty dishes, as well as an “Iron Chef”- style competition, local artists showcasing their talents, live entertainment by The Headliners and a silent auction with incredible items.

Additional activities will include “Kids Zone” with inflatable bounce houses and games, Famous Crab Races, a Bocce Ball Tournament by the Italian American Club of Hilton Head (please contact info@iachh.org to participate) and a silent auction.
